Shares are a way to raise capital for developing your colony. You can issue shares to generate money, but as long as they remain on the market, other companies can buy them up and potentially snatch your seat out from under you. Conversely, you can buy up other colonies - and if they are suffering from a series of unfortunate disasters, pushing the share price down, so much the better.
